Comparator Shims, Mounting Blocks and Step Wedges
COMPARaTOR SHIMS - 3/4" X 2"
Some codes require that shims be used under penetrameters to compensate for thickness of a backing ring or weld reinforcement. Shims are supplied in the same materials as penetrameters. They are available in 1/16" increments, from 1/16" through 1" thick. These dimensions allow approximately 1/8" clearance on each side of the penetrameter with which they are to be used. Material and size identification indicating actual thickness is marked on each shim.

MOUNTING BLOCKS - 1" X 2-1/4"
Mounting blocks are used when it is impractical to place the penetrameter directly on object being radiographed. Most codes specify that a mounting block of the same material and thickness be placed with penetrameter, adjacent to the part, in such manner that it will show clearly on the radiograph. Standard mounting blocks are supplied in the same sizes as the penetrameters. Sizes from 1/8" through 2-1/2" are 1" wide x 2-1/4" long. Sizes larger than 2-1/2" are 1-1/2" x 3" long, allowing at least 1/4" clearance on each side of the penetrameter.

STEP WEDGES
Step wedges are used for the calibration of x-ray machines and evaluation of techniques. Also, when an object with various thicknesses is radiographed, a step wedge of the same material incorporating those thicknesses may often be used to advantage. By placing a penetrameter on each step and including the step wedge in the radiograph, the sensitivity may be suitably determined for each thickness.
Custom step wedges with a continuous series of steps can be manufactured to your specifications for any height and width. Descriptions or drawings must include wedge width, dimensions of steps, total number of steps, and total height of wedge.
